Hunting & Fishing Tattoos North Dakota: Pheasant, Walleye & Deer Designs
The Great Outdoors on Your Skin: Designing the Perfect Hunting and Fishing Tattoos
In North Dakota, hunting and fishing aren’t just hobbies. They are a heritage. They are freezing mornings in a duck blind on Lake Sakakawea, walking miles of shelterbelts for that one flush, and stories told around a cleaning table.
For many of our clients, a hunting or fishing tattoo isn't just a picture of an animal; it’s a memorial to a father, a celebration of a trophy, or a permanent connection to the land we call home.
At Sacred Skin Tattoo, we specialize in "Wildlife Realism." We know the difference between a mule deer and a whitetail, and we know exactly how that walleye eye should shine. Here is how to design a piece that honors the hunt.
1. The Pheasant: Capturing the Iridescence
The Ring-necked Pheasant is the king of North Dakota birds. But tattooing one is technically difficult.
The Challenge: A pheasant isn't just brown. It’s copper, gold, emerald green, and deep red. The feathers have an iridescence (shine) that changes in the light.
The Execution: Our color realism specialists use high-saturation inks and careful blending to mimic that metallic sheen on the neck and head. We often recommend doing these large (forearm or calf) so we can detail individual feathers.
2. The Walleye & Northern Pike
If you live in Williston, you’ve probably spent time on the water. Fish tattoos are popular, but they often go wrong if the artist doesn't understand the anatomy.
The Texture: A fish shouldn't look like a cartoon. We use different shading techniques to create the "wet" look of scales and slime coats.
The Action: Instead of a stiff fish profile, consider a design with movement—a walleye turning to strike a lure, or a pike thrashing the surface.
The "Glassy Eye": The most important detail in a walleye tattoo is the unique, cloudy-gold eye. If that isn't right, it doesn't look like a walleye.
3. The European Mount (Deer Skulls)
Not everyone wants a photorealistic deer face. A very popular and timeless style is the European Mount (skull and antlers).
Why it works: It creates a striking, high-contrast image. The bone texture looks incredible in black and grey wash.
Customization: We can incorporate geometric shapes, wildflowers, or arrows around the skull to make it unique to you. It looks rugged but artistic.
4. Scenery and Silhouettes
Sometimes, the memory is about the place, not the animal.
The Badlands: We can design sleeves that feature the rugged horizon of the ND Badlands or the winding Missouri River.
The Silhouette: A simple, solid black silhouette of a hunter and dog against a sunset is a classic, clean look that ages perfectly.
Respecting the Reference
Do you have a photo of a specific deer you harvested or a fish you caught? Bring it in. We love doing custom work based on your actual trophies. However, please ensure the photo is clear. If you want us to match the antlers of a specific buck, we need a high-res shot of the rack.
Ready to Mark Your Season?
Whether you want a full-color pheasant on your calf or a black and grey deer skull on your chest, we have the artists to execute it.

Pro Tip: Sun protection is vital for wildlife tattoos. The greens and oranges in fish and birds will fade if you don't sunscreen them during the summer fishing season.
